How do organizations keep their social media accounts safe, especially when they are accessed by multiple employees?

As companies continue to grow their social media management teams, account security should become a top priority. We’ve seen the social media accounts of well-known organizations get hacked – and this vulnerability can be a major crisis. Hacked accounts can tarnish a company’s reputation and cause valuable followers to be lost.

Companies where many employees have access to shared accounts are also susceptible to phishing attacks. An employee may think they’re diligently responding to a social channel’s email request for information, but are actually providing account info to hackers.

And while we don’t like to think that someone we’ve hired would become an angry ex-employee some day, it could happen.

Social Media Security Risks

By having security protocols in place, businesses can lessen the chance of falling victim to security breaches. We’ve put together a checklist of points to consider for your own social media security:

  • Ensure your information is up to date (email address, contact person, security questions). If it’s been a while since your account was set up, be sure that you have the right information to re-establish security in the event your accounts are attacked.
  • Set difficult passwords. Follow the recommended password setup for each channel, and use passwords that are not easily guessed.
  • Change passwords regularly. Passwords should be changed on a regular basis, and after any employee changes.
  • Use a non-personal email address for setting up accounts. Avoid using an email address with the name of an employee who may leave the company at some point, or an email address that could be guessed from a company directory.
  • Require passwords to be entered. Passwords that are saved for convenience can compromise accounts if a laptop or phone is stolen.
  • Put governance procedures in place to ensure posts are approved before going live.
